IMMEDIATE RELATIVE GREEN CARD

HOW TO OFFER A GREEN CARD TO A FOREIGN FAMILY MEMBER

A US citizen or legal permanent resident can file an adjustment of status petition for a close family member who wishes to immigrate to America.

A family-based green card is an immigrant visa that allows the applicant to join their close relatives in the US. Qualifying close relatives are exclusively your spouse, children, parents, or siblings. Obtaining a green card through family means you can permanently move to the US.

The green card holder will have “permanent resident” status until they apply for US citizenship. Certain relatives must wait until a number of slots become available before they can immigrate.

This application can be requested through the Department of State at the US embassy or consulate in your country or in the US directly to USCIS.

Once you obtain your green card based on a qualified family relationship with a US citizen or legal permanent resident who is not your spouse, you may be eligible to apply for naturalization after living in the United States as a legal permanent resident for at least five years.
