GREEN CARD RENEWAL/REPLACEMENT

WHEN TO RENEW OR REPLACE A GREEN CARD

A Green Card (Permanent Resident Card) is issued by USCIS to foreign nationals authorized to live and work permanently in the United States. Green Cards are typically valid for ten years and must be renewed before they expire. These are the most common situations to apply for Green Card renewal or replacement:

1. Your 10-year validity card has expired or will expire within the next six months.

2. Your card was lost, stolen, mutilated or destroyed.

3. Your card contains incorrect information.

4. You legally changed your name or other biographical information that appears on your card since you last received it.

5. You have never received the card issued by USCIS.

If you obtained your Green Card through marriage and are currently a conditional permanent resident, there are certain steps you must take before applying for renewal at the end of the initial two-year period. Specifically, you need to request the removal of the condition that was placed on your permanent resident status. This means that apart from the items 2, 3, 4 and 5 renewal options above that you can do any time you need, you must ensure that you have taken the necessary steps to have the condition removed from your status prior to submitting your renewal application for a 10-year Green Card (1).
