“My name is Alejandro Aguiniga. I immigrated to the United States of America in December 1989, to be precise, with a fiancé visa, which gave me 30 days from my entry date to marry my wife, Karen. We had already lived together for 4 years in Mexico and had a 7-month-old daughter, so my Green Card was immediately granted. In 1997, we divorced. My immigration status did not change, and I even renewed my Green Card for another 10 years. For personal reasons, I went to Mexico in 2003. Upon returning, I feared I had overstayed and lived worried about possible immigration penalties for many years. I thought I would need to hire a lawyer to renew my Green Card and never did.
